Kam Chanode

Viagem a trabalho pelo NE da Tailândia, Isam. Nossa base, Udon Thani, localizada a 560 km de Bangkok com cerca de 140 mil habitantes. Clima agradabilíssimo, dias ensolarados, ao redor de 30 graus Celsius, apesar de ser uma das regiões mais áridas do país.

No primeiro dia, visitamos algumas cidades na fronteira com o Laos, há cerca de 2 horas de carro. A fronteira com o Laos  é o Rio Mekong.

A cidade mais famosa da região é Nong Khai conhecida pela aparição de "Nang Phayanak", a serpente mítica conhecida como "Naga". Os locais afirmam ver todos os anos as "Bolas de Fogo" no Rio Mekong, fenômeno sobrenatural que ocorre no mês de outubro seguindo o calendário lunar. Imaginem que, nesta época do ano, milhares de Tailandeses, de diversos extratos sociais, viajam para lá e se aglutinam na beira do famoso rio para esperar o fenômeno. Muitos afirmam ter visto, inclusive em 2009 após 2 anos de frustrações.

No segundo dia, viajamos para o Sudeste da região, mais algumas horas em estradas de asfalto bem estreitas e de terra. A paisagem muda, radicalmente, pela distância do grande rio, e pelo clima semi-árido da região. Lembra muitíssimo o Nordeste Brasileiro.

Um de meus companheiros de viagem sugeriu na volta uma pausa para desfrutarmos um oásis da região. Interessante, este lugar chamado "Kam Chanode", é um local sagrado para os moradores, especialmente mulheres que visitam este local de perigrinação. Poucos estrangeiros visitam o local. Lá, existe uma ilha no meio dos campos de arroz com vegetação abundante, palmeiras altas, contrastando com a paisagem típica.

Impressionante perceber que a temperatura cai uns 5 graus quando cruzamos a ponte que dá acesso ao local. No interior há um local de orações e o famoso poço onde acredita-se ser a entrada para o mundo subterrâneo onde a famosa Naja vive.

Alguns Thais me falaram que o local é amedrontador, mas na verdade não percebí isto. Sentí uma atmosfera bastante positiva ao perceber o quanto os habitantes do local se engajam nas orações, no Sermão de um Monge, nos sons dos gongos, nos banhos com a água do poço... As pessoas também coletam água para beber e levar consigo acreditando ter propriedades mágicas. Outros, raspam com as unhas o caule das palmeiras em busca dos sonhados números da loteria. Sorte no jogo, sorte na vida, cultura e religião estão ligados aqui como em outras partes do mundo.

Business trip to Thailand NE, Isam. Our base, Udon Thani, located about 560 km from Bangkok, around 140 thousand inhabitants. Pleasant weather, sunny days, around 30 degrees Celsius, despite being one of the most arid regions of the country. On the first day we have visited some cities on the border with Laos, about 2 hours by car. The border with Laos is the Mekong River. The most famous city is Nong Khai. It is known for the legend of "Nang Phayanak", the mythical snake known as "Naga". Locals say they see the Balls of Fire Phenomena in the Mekong River that occurs in the month of October following the lunar calendar. Every October, on the 15th full moon, thousands of Thais from different social classes, gather on the banks of the famous river to wait for the phenomenon. Many claim to have seen it, even last year after 2 years of frustration. On the second day we've traveled to the South East region, a few hours hitting asphalt narrow roads. The landscape changes dramatically due to the semi-arid climate of the region. It reminds me the Brazilian Northeast region.One of my friends has suggested us to stop for a break to enjoy an oasis in the region. Interesting, this place called "Kam Chanode" is a sacred pilgrimage site for the locals, especially women. Few foreigners visit the site. It is an island in the middle of rice fields with lush vegetation, palm trees, contrasting with the typical landscape. Impressive, I've realized that the temperature dropped about 5 degrees when I crossed the bridge that gives access to the site. Inside there are a place of prayer and the famous pond where it is believed to be the entrance to the underworld where people believe the famous snake lives.

Some Thais have told me that the place is somehow spooky. In my opinion they overreact. I felt a very positive atmosphere. Amazing seeing how locals engage in praying, pay attention to the sermon of a Monk, listening to the sounds of gongs, people using and drinking the magic water from the pond... People also collect water to drink and take away believing it has magical properties. Others, with the nails scrape the stems of palm trees in search of dreamed lottery numbers. Lucky in game, Lucky in life, culture and religion are linked here as in other parts of the world.
